Easy DIY Frame for Tv

By now I am sure you have seen all the Frame tv craze.

Don’t get me wrong I think those tv’s are super cool but they are also super out of my budget… Especially since we have a perfectly good tv already hanging in our living room.

But just because I am happy with our old tv doesn’t mean I still don’t want a super cute and fancy frame for it.

I have seen people manipulate the Frame tv Frames to fit their tv’s but those things are actually really expensive too.

So I grabbed some PVC molding and decided to build my own version for less than $40.

DIY TV Frame

Supplies for DIY Frame:

For this project I made very simple and easy 45 degree cuts with a miter saw, but you can also use a hand saw and a block. This project can definitely be accomplished without a single power tool, they just make it go quicker.

Cutting the Frame Tv Pieces

Start by measuring your actual tv, length and width. Then subtract about half an inch from each measurement because you want the frame to overlap the tv at least slightly.

Next, cut the molding down to size, each end having a 45 degree angle. Also be sure to have the same part of the molding touching the back of the saw for each cut. If you cut the molding in different directions the cuts will not match up, trust me.

Do a dry fit test to make sure all the angles meet seamlessly.

Making a Slot for the Tv Sensor

After all the tv frame pieces were cut, I had to make one small modification for our tv sensor. I would definitely test to see if your sensor works through the frame before assembling.

I knew ours wouldn’t because it doesn’t even work when I have our Christmas mantel garland up…

Start by measuring where the slot needs to be and drilling a few small holes into that area.

After I had a few holes drilled, I finished the slot off with a sanding disk on my Dremel tool.

Sanding the Frame Molding Pieces

Once the slot was done I sanded the glossy finish off the molding using 220 grit sandpaper.

After I wiped the frame pieces clean, I decided to apply the first coat of paint. I went with Krylon’s Metallic Gold spray paint. It is the perfect rich gold that has depth and doesn’t look tacky.

I applied two coats making sure to cover the ornate details of each piece.

Assembling the DIY Tv Frame

When the pieces are dry, it’s time to start assembling them.

Use super glue to attach the corners together. This super glue is amazing and I will never use another kind again. They did not sponsor this project and they don’t even know who I am, but I tried two other kinds before this one and they were both major let downs…

While assembling the corners be sure to also use a square to make sure the frame pieces are square to each other.

This may be overkill but I also added two small finishing nails into each of the corners. I reinforce everything because there is no guarantee my toddler won’t be hanging from it at some point..

Finish Touches and Tv Support

Now it’s time for the finishing touches. Apply caulk to the corner seams and nail holes. Once it dries, give the entire frame another coat of paint and finish with your preferred sealer.

I sealed this tv frame with clear matte finish wax spray because I like the subtle chalky finish. Plus it dries really quickly which is a bonus.

There are many ways to attach a frame to a tv but this one seemed simplest to me. I used a scrap piece of corner molding and glued it to the back of the frame where it will sit on the tv.

You could also accomplish this same idea by creating an L shape bracket out of scrap wood.

My molding was slightly wonky (my own fault for not checking it at the store) so I also added a Command Strip to the two bottom corners to secure the bottom of the frame to the tv.

DIY Frame for a Tv Reveal

I can’t even lie, this framed tv looks so much better! Even Adam is impressed with it, he thinks it looks regal now (his words not mine).

This is one of those DIY’s I should have done much sooner because I am so happy with it.

For the “art” part of this DIY I use art screensavers from YouTube. I like to search vintage art, landscape art, watercolor art, etc. You can also buy Tv art off of Etsy for pretty cheap.
