Just when I say the kitchen renovation is complete, I add another project.
In my defense this one was super cheap, quick, and easy to complete!
I am in deep love with our little DIY breakfast nook area. We use it constantly, but it was missing something… Cafe curtains.
They are such a sweet addition to any window and I knew they would be the cherry on top to this space.
There are some really budget friendly cafe curtain options out there. But none are as cheap as this DIY version I came up with.
Cafe Curtains for the Kitchen
Cafe curtains are a versatile and stylish window treatment option that can add a touch of elegance and charm to any space.
These curtains are a popular choice because of their unique design and functionality. Cafe curtains cover only the bottom half of the window, allowing natural light to filter in while maintaining privacy.
This design not only creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere but also adds a decorative element to the room. Exactly what our breakfast nook needed.
Benefits of Cafe Curtains
Versatility in Design
One of the key advantages of cafe curtains is their versatility in design. They come in a variety of fabrics, patterns, and colors. This makes it easy to find the perfect style to complement your existing decor. Whether you prefer a classic, understated look or a bold, statement-making design, cafe curtains can be customized to suit your taste.
Creating a Cozy Ambiance
Cafe curtains are ideal for creating a cozy ambiance in any room. By allowing natural light to enter the space while still providing privacy, these curtains can make a room feel warm and inviting. Whether you install them in your kitchen, living room, or bedroom, cafe curtains can instantly elevate the atmosphere and make your space feel more intimate.
Practicality and Functionality
In addition to their aesthetic appeal, cafe curtains are also practical and functional. They are easy to install and maintain, making them a convenient choice for everyone who already has a lot on their to do list. Cafe curtains are also a great option for small spaces or rooms with limited wall space, as they do not overwhelm the window or obstruct the view.
How to Hang Cafe Curtains
Standard measurements for cafe curtains typically vary depending on the size of the window and the desired look.
However, a common recommendation is to hang cafe curtains at approximately half the height of the window. This allows for privacy while still allowing natural light to filter in.
As for the width of cafe curtains, they should typically cover the bottom half of the window, leaving the top half exposed. This creates a balanced and visually appealing look.
It is important to measure the width of the window and add a few inches on each side to ensure proper coverage and fullness when the curtains are gathered.
In terms of where cafe curtains should be hung, they are commonly installed in kitchens, dining rooms, and bathrooms. They are ideal for windows that are located at eye level or lower, as they provide privacy without completely blocking out natural light.
How to Make DIY No Sew $4 Cafe Curtains
Originally when I decided our breakfast nook needed cafe curtains, I scoured Amazon for a cute set. I found a ton of budget friendly options but to cover all three windows it was still going to cost over $50. Again that’s not a bad price at all, just not what I wanted to spend right now.
So I decided to come up with a really simple DIY version. This was the easiest way to DIY cafe curtains ever, especially because there is no sewing involved.
I started by heading to Walmart and finding a set of long linen dish towels with a design I liked. These dish towels measured 20″x30″ which were the perfect length and width for our windows.
Next I cut off the sewed in tag and ironed them out. That’s it, these dish towels are officially ready to be cafe curtains, but first I needed to get the hardware ready.
Cafe Curtain Rod
There are a lot of cafe curtain rod options out there, but again we are going with what is most budget friendly. I purchased these white spring tension rods for less than $5 a piece.
I took them home and spray painted them with gold spray paint. Something about the look of gold hardware feels warm and inviting.
While the cafe curtain rods dried I added some antique gold Rub n Buff to the extra clip on curtain rings I had. These are the same curtain rings I used in our living room and bedroom and I absolutely love the style and look.
After all the hardware was dry it was time to simply attach the curtains and hang them up!
No Sew $4 Cafe Curtains DIY Reveal
I hung our new cafe curtains at about the middle of the window so that the curtains lightly touch the sill. Since we used tension rods, no power tools or drilling was even required!
I am absolutely in love with how our DIY no sew dish towel curtains turned out. They are exactly the “something extra” this breakfast nook needed. Plus I was able to complete this entire project for less than I would have spent on just the curtains.
The best part about this diy project is that you can create these beautiful cafe curtains in whatever design or style you like. Just make sure that the dish towels or tea towels you choose are long enough for your window.
I highly recommend considering cafe curtains for your home to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere while adding a decorative touch to your windows. Whether you prefer a classic, traditional look or a modern, contemporary design, cafe curtains can be customized to suit your style and elevate your space.
Let me know what you think of our latest budget friendly project and if you would add cafe curtains to your space.
